Undoubtedly, the state of our hair complements our physical appearance in no small measure. It is why we pay a lot of attention to buying the best hair grooming products like hair conditioners, shampoos, and treatments. All in a bid to ensure excellent hair quality.

However, most people do not know that what we consume is essential for maintaining hair quality. This is especially true when it comes to hair health and sugar-rich food. People who consume many sugar-rich foods, may find that their hair quality is poor or even hair loss.

A 2000 Finland scientific report revealed that people who hair health was linked to intake of sugar-rich food. It noted that people who consumed a lot of sugar in their diet are more prone to hair loss.

Correlation Between Hair Health & Sugar-Rich Food

This same scientific report also revealed that men who suffered from conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, were more susceptible to becoming bald as they grew older. In other words, people who consume a lot of unhealthy sugar-rich meals are more than likely to experience hair loss.

A different 2003 Finish report revealed that women who consumed a lot of sugar were more at risk of losing their hair through the condition referred to as Androgenic Alopecia.
Addition Mexico, Taiwan, and Turkey, research further confirmed that people who ate sugar-rich diets were likely to get bald.

There is no concrete scientific reason why people who consume a lot of sugar are more at risk of experiencing hair loss. But researchers tried to determine if they could reverse it by consuming healthy foods.

Meals rich in proteins, vegetables, grains, an appropriate amount of sugar and fat, vitamins, and minerals supply the body with the necessary nutrients to boost hair growth and development. They also reduce the testosterone hormone, DHT, which causes hair loss.

Symptoms Of Sugar-related Hair Loss

We will highlight some symptoms of sugar-related hair loss so that you can be on the watch once you notice any of them. They include but are not limited to the following points:

  • Hair breaking from the root
  • Thin hair strands
  • Early white or grayish hair color

How To Reduce Hair Loss

Although many studies have revealed that sugar and insulin resistance triggers balding and hair loss, the same researchers also agreed that there were other contributing factors to hair loss besides sugar. Crash diets cause temporary hair loss due to incumbent nutritional factors, e.g., anorexia, bulimia, and other medical conditions. The following states or items can also trigger hair loss:

  • Drinking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages in excess
  • Elevated stress levels
  • Overweight
